George "G.A." A. Halsell Jr.
Veteran The only child of George Allen Halsell Sr. (a veteran of WWI) and Lula Mae (Hurst) Halsell, G.A. was born on December 7, 1923. After graduating from Lockhart High School in June of 1941, he entered Texas A and M, but after 3 semesters left school to enlist in the Army on Feb. 16, 1943.
Following basic G.A. (or “Tex” as he was called) was assigned to a machine gun detachment in Company L, First Infantry Regiment, Sixth Infantry Division. They were sent to the south Pacific theater, arriving in New Guinea on Feb. 7, 1944.
After being involved in several battles, George was shot in the right shoulder by a Japanese sniper on Feb. 26, 1945 on the Philippine island of Luzon. His body was later recovered and buried in the Philippines. In 1948 his body was disinterred and returned to the United States. Buried in Jeffrey Cemetery on Oct. 23, 1948 with full military honors.
