"JAMES P. HELLUMS - Uncle Jim Hellums, perhaps the oldest man in the county, being ninety years of age, died at the home of his son near McMahan Saturday morning at 4:30. A few weeks ago he broke his leg, but up to that time he had been in good health, considering his age. He gradually lost strength and suffered greatly as a result of the accident.
Mr. Hellums was one of the early settlers of the county having come here from Mississippi in 1852, and had lived in the eastern part of the county since coming here.
He had for many years been a consistent member of the Primitive Baptist Church. He always lived an upright life and was highly respected and esteemed by all who knew him.
The remains were laid to rest in the McMahan cemetery Saturday afternoon in the presence of a large number of friends. The funeral services were conducted by Elder A. A. Culpepper of the Primitive Baptist church. A good man has gone to his reward.
The deceased is survived by several children and grand-children, his wife having preceded him several years.
The Register extends sympathy to the bereaved family."
