"IN MEMORY OF J. L. McMAHAN - A very sad gloom was cast over our community, county and other counties at two o’clock Wednesday morning, April 21, 1926, when the news was spread that Little McMahan had been drowned in Onion Creek at Bluff Springs near Austin.
Through God’s supreme power and skillful knowledge his body was rescued at one o’clock Friday afternoon April 23rd.
Little McMahan was born January 29. 1885, and was reared in Caldwell County. He was a son of E. J. McMahan of Dale.
He married Nettie Williams of Tilmon October 4, 1909. To this union two children were born, Helmon and Gladys McMahan.
Dale had been his home for the past fourteen years....
He was buried at 3:30 o’clock Saturday afternoon in the Jeffrey cemetery at McMahan. Rev. R. A. Butler of Mendoza conducted the funeral services and was assisted by Rev. Holt of San Marcos, Rev. (sic) Dick Cole of McMahan, Rev. Sam Bozarth of Lockhart and Rev. Arthur riddle of Dale.
He was a member of the Modern Woodman Lodge...
Those who are left to mourn his loss besides his devoted wife and two children are his aged father, E. J. McMahan of Dale; two brothers, R. J. McMahan of Dale, R. W. McMahan of McMahan; four sisters of McMahan: Mrs. W. C. Jeffrey, Mrs. J.R. Hurst, Mrs. J. D. Cole, Mrs. J. F. Etheridge and numerous other relatives and friends...."
