"Buddy Long was born in McMahan, Texas. His father was Walter William "Bones" Long (1876-1964), and his mother was Dona "Donie" Elizabeth McGee Long (1881-1952). He was born late in his parents’ lives. older sister Myrtle was born in 1904 (she died in infancy.). Older brother James Howard was born in 1906. He died in 1936. Sister Etta Mae (White) was born in 1908, and a brother G.A. Long was born in 1911. There was a gap of nine years before Buddy came along on November 7, 1920. he was followed by a younger sister, Janie Beth (Stone), born in 1923. Buddy attended McMahan and Lockhart schools....He was a star on the Lockhart High School basketball team. After graduating he continued to live at home, while working as a laborer on a highway crew. In 1939 or 1940, he enlisted in the Medical Detachment of the 141st Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division. The Detachment was sited at the Lockhart armory under the command of Dr. Abner Ross. Dr. Joseph Coopwood (who would be killed in Italy by artillery fire in November 1943) was the assistant detachment commander."
During fighting with German forces at La Cosa Creek near Salerno, Italy, "Buddy, a battalion medic, was killed by artillery shrapnel.
Buddy’s body was brought home from Italy and on December 1, 1948 his funeral was held at Lockhart’s T. B. Field Funeral home, with the reverend Ed. V. Horne officiating. His body was then taken to McMahan for burial in the Jeffrey Cemetery, American Legion Post 41 according full military honors."
