 Veteran "Walter Adolph Voigt was born in Spofford, Kinney County, Texas on February 25, 1917. He was the second child of Sam Charles and Lou Ella (Nite) Voigt. His older sister, Gladys Lee (Bowling) was born in 1914. younger siblings were Sam Charles Jr., Orbin, Clifton, Louella (Duran), William, and Helen (Franks). The family moved several times, living in Kinney, Atascosa, and Bastrop Counties. The Voigt family settled in Caldwell County in the late 1930s....
Walter enlisted in the Army Air Corps in July 1941. his last name was immediately misspelled and he went through his short military career with the surname "Voight."..."
On September 17, 1944, Walter was co-pilot of a C-47 to drop 13 troopers of Company A, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Divion to seize bridges near the town of Nijmegen on the road to Arnhem, Netherlands. The plane took heavy anti-aircraft fire and crashed with loss of the four crew members and one trooper. Coffins were built and the small town of Beers gave the five a Catholic funeral in the church‘s graveyard. American graves registration units reburied them in a temporary cemetery at Neuville-en-Condroz, Belgium. Bodies were later moved to Jefferson Barracks, Missouri in 1949.
